‘Of Light Itself – A retroPerspective’ exhibition at the Langham Galleries highlights 66 years of Tsuenko Kokubo’s creative life – July 22 to October 16

The Langham Cultural Society, Kaslo, is honoured to present well-known Silverton artist, Tsuneko Kokubo’s traveling exhibition Of Light Itself – A retroPerspective, running July 22 through to October 16, 2022 . There will be a public Opening Friday July 22, 7 to 9 pm. This special evening is the first public art opening in over 2 years! We welcome everyone for refreshments and at 7:30 pm a film screening of Kokubo’s past performance of So Kat’ta will be followed by a Q&A with the artist.

Of Light Itself  – A retroPerspective showcases the life and work of the eclectic Japanese Canadian artist Tsuneko Kokubo who was born in Steveston, B.C. in 1937, and since 1994, has been living on the shores of Slocan Lake. Fondly known as ‘Koko’, her creativity and knowledge in several arenas of experience and study are reflected in her multiple bodies of work, both visual and in performance physical theatre.

The exhibition is a 66-year survey of Koko’s creative life, which includes paintings from her earlier art school days to her current works in oils and acrylics. Parallel to her visual work, the exhibition includes sample video clips of past choreographed performances over the years, and interviews, expanding her dynamic vision through multiple mediums.

The traveling exhibition is curated by independent Nelson-based curator, Maggie Tchir, and will travel to Gallery 2 Grand Forks in May 2023 and to the Penticton Art Gallery in 2024. The Langham acknowledges the BC Arts Council, the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance, and the Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake for their support and financial assistance. We hope to see you on July 22 at 7 pm!
